Interethnic Contact, Curriculum and Attitudes in the First Year of College

  • Results showed that first-year experiences -contact and curriculum- were related to attitudes at the end of the first year but for European American students only.
  • Results offered less insight into what or how experiences might shape the attitudes of Asian American and African American students.
  • Outgroup contact did not have equal consequences across groups.

  • In order to understand intergroup relations in education in the current context, it is crucial that multiple experiences within higher education be considered, that the analysis extends beyond group contact and also accounts for the varied consequences these experiences have across ethnic groups.
