Research Question:
Evidence that school desegregation leads to desegregation in several areas of adult life.
Published: 1
Journal Name or Institutional Affiliation: Phi Delta Kappan
Journal Entry: December
Year: 1984
Findings:
  • Desegregation of schools leads to desegregation in later life-in college, in social situations, and on the job.
  • Members of minority groups who have been educated in segregated schools will gradually move into segregated niches in adult society.
  • School desegregation would still make White-controlled institutions more open to members of minority groups, therefore creating greater opportunities for adult desegregation.
  • Schools are also major employers and respected social institutions in their communities.
  • Segregation is harmful because most minority groups must find their ways into desegregated institutions if they are to achieve success as adults.
  • Schools are the place in which society socializes its next generation of citizens.
