Research Question:
Raise the perspective that Brown resulted in at least one great negative unintended consequence for American public schools.
Published: 1
Journal Name or Institutional Affiliation: Society
Journal Entry: Vol. 42, No. 4, pp. 49-53
Year: 2005
Findings:
  • Brown had at least one great negative unintended consequence for American Public Schools: It began the historical trend of removing control over schools from locally elected officials to non-elected officials to the federal government.
  • Increasing federal involvement in local systems especially through desegregation court orders, has resulted in the alienation of many white – and increasingly Black- middle class families.
  • There seems a kind of perverse logic in operation here, where federal funding guidelines encourage schools to debase themselves.
