2004 - Interethnic Contact, Curriculum and Attitudes in the First Year of College

Attribution: Lopez, Gretchen
Researchers: Gretchen Lopez
University Affiliation: Syracuse University
Email: gelopez@syr.edu
Research Question:
Interethnic contact in higher education, and the impact of a curriculum and residence hall programs including perspectives of race and ethnicity.
Published: 1
Journal Name or Institutional Affiliation: Journal of Social Issues
Journal Entry: Vol. 60, No.1, pp. 75-94
Year: 2004
Findings:
  • Results showed that first-year experiences -contact and curriculum- were related to attitudes at the end of the first year but for European American students only.
  • Results offered less insight into what or how experiences might shape the attitudes of Asian American and African American students.
  • Outgroup contact did not have equal consequences across groups.
  • Results in the study suggest that intergroup as well as outgroup contact may be important to Asian American attitudes.
  • Residence hall activities were not found to have a significant effect for European American students.
  • In order to understand intergroup relations in education in the current context, it is crucial that multiple experiences within higher education be considered, that the analysis extends beyond group contact and also accounts for the varied consequences these experiences have across ethnic groups.
