School Racial Composition and Student Educational Aspirations: A Question of Equity in a Multiracial Society

  • Students who have more school support have greater interest in higher education. Between a student in a low support school and a student in a high support school, there is an 11 point difference in likelihood to indicate interest in going to college.
  • When using the percent White enrollment measure, school racial composition matters. The percent of White students is positively associated with students having interest in attending a 4 year college.
  • No effect when racial composition is measured in clusters.
