Findings:
- It is important to appreciate the complexities of issues related to the social structure of desegregation.
- What happens out of school should not be neglected when studying children’s social interaction.
- Importance of weak ties.
- The use of free-choice sociometric procedures and analysis of weak as well as strong ties will broaden the structural picture beyond that of the individual and pair.
- Possible value of process by which school spaces and activities get sorted -“tipping”- in studies of neighborhood segregation.
- Need to understand much better the extent to which interaction among students affect learning.
- Research is urgently needed in which the outcome variable is not number of friendship choices received or changes in test scores, grades, or other short term data, but rather ultimate socioeconomic results.
- It is important to take context into account if we want to understand what is happening and what can and cannot be done only attending a micro-level analysis.
