  • Challenges of Asian Americans have been ignored in the debate of educational equity.
  • Segregation among Asian Americans cannot be addressed the same way segregation among Black and Latinos is addressed.
  • Brown does not include the Asian American population.
  • The impact of racial segregation needs to be examined in the context of language, culture, immigration status and socioeconomic situations that vary for different subpopulations among Asian Americans.

Data Description:
  • Data were collected from four public comprehensive high schools in California located in neighborhoods with high concentrations of Vietnamese or Hmongs.
  • Vietnamese studies in Westminster and San Jose & Vietnamese in Sacramento and Fresno.
  • Used statewide data of seniors who were college bound or at least considering college as a postsecondary option were the respondents.
  • Sample of 106 students respondents: 56 Hmong and 50 Vietnamese’s minimum GPA 3.2
  • Focus groups –> 1 hour long interviews
  • All interviews were tape-recorded
